Fuse Magazine have reviewed Firebrand, so here it is: "Baldego is the alter-ego of one JJ McGowan, an
established live performer who will be familiar to giggoers around Glasgow and Edinburgh. Born of a love
of Radiohead, Muse, Led Zeppelin and Drum ‘n’ Bass,
Baldego’s engaging brand of electro-indie has gained
him support slots with the likes of Jamie T and Nick
Harper.
‘Firebrand’ soars and shivers with emotional pop tunes
that clatter with beatbox, and shout and whisper in
equal measure. ‘Space Cake’ is a brooding, expansive
big hitter that carries the drama and complexity of
Muse into indie singer-songwriter territory. ‘Invisible’ is
more introspective, but no less dramatic, spiraling from
a sampled piano sequence into a swirling electro
cloudburst of beatbox and sub-Spanish guitars. Baldego
is a man of many alter-ego’s, ‘Halfway To The Ground’
is an exotic, multi-layered exultant piece, sweating with
arresting vocals, Cuban sex-beats and electronica. ‘Taste
Consultant’ is a sassy acoustic tune but with Baldego’s
trademark layering and texture.
Overall, ‘Firebrand’ is a satisfying piece of work taking
the singer-songwriter brand to a different world, one
habited by technology and epic songwriting."
